(radiyallahu ‘anh)

by His Eminence Imam Sheikh Sayyid Mubarik Ali Shah Gilani El-Hashimi

Hazrat Sultan Hasan al-Basri] was born in the fifteenth year of Hijra in the reign of the second Khalif Hazrat Umar, radiyallahu 'anh, and was named Hasan by Hazrat 'Umar (radiyallahu 'anh) for he was a very beautiful child.

He is one of the most well known saints of all times. His sermons and lectures were unique in themselves. He was blessed with seeing one hundred and twenty As'habi Kiram of whom seventy belonged to the Battle of Badr. The Mother of Believers Hazrat Umm-e-Salama was very fond of him. Consequently numerous people benefited and obtained guidance from him.

When Hazrat Ali visit Basra he forbade all the preachers from preaching but allowed Hazrat Hasan al-Basri to continue with his guidance. Once in cognito, Hazrat Ali came to his lecture and posed a question, "Are you a scholar or a pupil?" He replied, "I am nothing, what I have received from the Holy Last Messenger, Sall Allahu alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallim, that I am conveying to the people." Hazrat Ali (Karam Allahu wajhahuu) upon hearing this remarked, "this young man is eloquent." Hazrat Hasan al-Basri realized that he was being questioned by Hazrat Ali. He left the pulpit and followed him outside after approaching him he said, "O' Amirul-Mu'mineen, for Allah's sake teach me Taharah (cleanliness)." Hazrat Ali taught him both the exoteric and esoteric Taharah and he stayed in the Suhbat (companionship) of Hazrat Ali. Great Imams of Islam: Imam Abu Hanifah,
by Maida Malik
Hadrat Imam Abu Hanifah—Nu’man ibn Thabit 80-150 A.H.

Better known as al-Imam al-A’zam (The Greatest Imam), or by his kunya Abu Hanifah, Nu’man ibn Thabit was born in the city of Kufa (modern day Iraq) in the year 80 A.H (689 A.D). Born into a family of tradesmen, the Imam’s family was of Persian origin as well as descending from the Noble Nabi’s (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) companion, Hadrat Salman al-Farsi (Radiyallahu ‘anh). Imam Abu Hanifah’s father, Thabit, had met in Kufa, Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib (Radiyallahu ‘anh) who made du’a for him and his progeny, and some say that Abu Hanifah was a result of this du’a.

A hadith given by al-Bukhari and Muslim states that Hadrat Abu Hurairah narrated Allah’s messenger (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) as saying: “if the Deen were at the Pleides, even then a person from Persia would have taken hold of it, or one amongst the Persian descent would surely have found it.” Abu Hurairah also narrates: “We were sitting in the company of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) when Surah al-Jumu’ah was revealed to him and when he recited amongst them (those who were sitting there) said ‘Allah’s Messenger?’ but Allah’s Rasul (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) made no reply, until he was questioned once, twice or thrice, and there was amongst us Salman al-Farsi. Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) placed his hand on Salman and then said: ‘Even if Iman were near the Pleides a man from amongst these would surely find it.’

Imam as-Suyuti, a Shafi’i alim (rh) remarked, “It has been communicated unanimously that this hadith refers to Imam Abu Hanifah.”
